Matchy Matchy - Courtney Crowley

A recent trend I have seen everywhere is the matchy matchy look.  Using the same exact pattern or design on the top and on the bottom.  Going back a couple years, perfect matching was not a go-to trend.  This fashion trend can be seen in street style as well as high fashion on the runway.  Sometimes I love it but other times it can just be way too much.  Regardless, I think everyone needs to give this a go!

"Taken from menswear, he said, and then lavishly embellished with dazzling textures. Hence baseball jerseys, football tops, tuxedos, motorcycle jackets, T-shirts and tank tops received the Vuitton super-luxe treatment – embroidered, bejeweled, feathered and sequined – to within an inch of its life. Who Wear Short Shorts!?....Apparently Men!!

Shorts shorts for men!?.... I absolutely love it!!! I find it very intriguing for the fact that the lines are beginning to be blurred with this particular look short shorts aren't just for women anymore. If any man is deciding to wear short shorts for the warmer season wear a nice boat shoe, a denim or a linen shirt and a pair of sunglasses and to top the overall look off a GREAT pair of legs!!

What's Your Slogan?

As we saw in class, the latest trend in designer and sportswear/street wear is word graphics on the garment.  This has become popular even among high designers such as Alexander Wang, Dior and Louis Vuitton.  This idea is taken from the trickle up theory.  People have been wearing shirts and different clothing as long as I can remember with different words and slogans on them.  The designers are now adapting to this idea and creating high end pieces with word graphics.  Do we think this is hit or miss??

Loco for Logos
From Mark Jacobs to DKNY everyone is drinking the same Kool-Aid! Whether it is their own logo or world famous logos like Coca-Cola, they are taking over the runways. The designers are embracing this cool grunge look.

POWER! SEX! WOMEN! TOM FORD! By Shavon Lewis

POWER! SEX! WOMEN! TOM FORD!
By Shavon Lewis

Tom has done it again. He tastefully delivers trend driven looks, with personality, sexuality, and power. His spring ready to wear collection gives a clear eye view as to why we drool over his collections each season. Never have I wanted to wear leather so badly in the spring, it's the TOM EFFECT! He dished up well tailored looks with great detail. The leather looks gave off architectural design with geometric shapes. A lot of cinching at the natural waist line, jackets with broad shoulders mini skirts and dresses that we don't feel guilty about, and dresses with heavy pop art detailing that remind you of graffiti (with elegance). The colors reflected a neutral palette, whites, blacks, and pops of coral. The high waist-ed boot is non-forgiving with beauty. Whether you wear them or just leave them in your closet...they make you smile. A lot of sheer looks walked down the runway, as well as textured looks where it almost looked as if glass was hugging the body. The dresses were almost like super hero costumes, for women. They make you feel like they hold power. I even saw fur with sheer paneling done down the center. Everything was done gracefully. It's sexy, but instead of slutty it screams POWER. These pieces made these women look confident, they are the women that you stare at in awe, and wonder how they pulled that off. Yes. Yes. Yes to this collection. Signing off.

Rodarte inspired by Van Gogh

1 of 2
Rodarte contributed to Art Pop by drawing inspiration from two very famous Van Gogh pieces.  They took almost literal translations from 'Sunflowers' and 'Starry Night' and places them onto knee length dresses. Personally, I believe that the concept works well with the 'Sunflowers' inspiration, but not nearly as well with 'Starry Night'.  I feel as if the translation  was too literal to ever work in everyday life, but for the runway it is an interesting concept. It is so different and fun to see a highly well known piece of art virtually coming to life and walking down the runway in a flirty little dress.  ~ Kristina Vitelli

Dreaming of Capri...

As usual, the winter seems longer than ever but our fashion veins are being pumped with warm weather trends. It seems as though an on-again, off-again trend is back on for Spring; so, will they stick around? Not that Capri's are ever really out of style, but they have noticeably become a favorite for many designers and street fashionistas alike. I'm loving the loose fit and ease to this particular street look.

Alexis Ambrosino
"The elaborately embellished jacket emerges as a hero piece this spring, as seen on the runway at Roberto Cavalli, Valentino and Erdem. Our highlight? Alexander McQueen’s lavishly embroidered, bold-shouldered style, with its hint of Spanish matador drama. Slip over a lace camisole with black crepe pants and glossy stilettos to make your own grand entrance"

Over and Over again we are seeing the embellishments this season, above they are incorporated into a blazer. This happens to be one example but THE TROPHY JACKET is definitely making an appearance. I think this trend will push a more edgy fashion for women.  Do we like it? Will it stick? Or is it too extreme and will it only be a fad?

The Masculine Mystique

The houndstooth, plaid and herringbone patterns are nothing new but the way they are being used is innovative for women's fashion.  Designers like Dries Van Noten, Haider Ackermann and Lanvin are using different silhouettes and draping them with silk and even embroidering with feathers.  Do we love it or do we love it?
